What digital camera would you suggest?

I am a novice. I took random photography classes in high school and college. I enjoyed them immensely. Photography continues to interest me. I currently have a Olympus stylus digital. It takes pictures, but I want to take photographs. People and animals are my favorite to photograph. I need some input on what kind of camera to look into. I am looking to make this a side thing.
I was looking at the Nikon D40…so I’d be willing to spend up to $500
